China has called for stronger cooperation with Bangladesh in the renewable energy sector, highlighting the need for long-term, sustainable solutions to ensure energy security and support climate goals.
Speaking at the Fourth Bangladesh-China Renewable Energy Forum in Dhaka on Monday, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said enhanced collaboration in clean energy could bring tangible benefits to both countries and serve as a model for green development under the Belt and Road Initiative.
He noted that Bangladesh is at a critical stage in its energy transition and encouraged faster progress toward renewable sources. Closer partnership between the two countries, he said, would not only align with Bangladesh’s development priorities but also contribute to global efforts to tackle climate change.
The ambassador also pointed to ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, particularly in the Middle East, which have raised concerns about the stability of global oil and gas supplies. In this context, he said countries like Bangladesh need to focus on reliable and sustainable energy alternatives.
While acknowledging the government’s efforts to ease energy shortages affecting households, industries and businesses, he described such measures as temporary. He stressed the importance of a structured transition to renewable energy, adding that China is ready to support Bangladesh in this process.
Looking ahead, he said China is prepared to expand investment and financing through multiple channels, offering long-term and preferential support for major renewable energy projects in the country.
The forum was attended by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood as the chief guest, while Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun joined as a special guest.
Organised by the Centre for Policy Dialogue, the event brought together policymakers, business leaders, development partners and investors to discuss opportunities and challenges in Bangladesh’s renewable energy transition.
Over the years, the forum has emerged as an important platform for dialogue, helping to strengthen cooperation and promote informed policy discussions as Bangladesh moves toward a more sustainable energy future.
