Critical Minerals Drive Clean Energy Future: UN

Critical minerals have become central to the global transition to clean energy, offering major economic opportunities while also raising concerns over conflict, corruption, environmental degradation and human rights abuses, according to the United Nations.

The issue is under discussion this week at the UN Security Council, which is examining whether the minerals needed to power the green energy transition can also become a foundation for peace and sustainable development.

Essential for Clean Energy

Critical minerals are indispensable components of modern technologies, including electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, solar panels, electricity grids, smartphones and other electronic devices.

As countries accelerate efforts to shift away from fossil fuels, demand for minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper and graphite is rising rapidly.

Without these resources, the transition to renewable energy would not be possible.

Large deposits of critical minerals are found across Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia, creating significant opportunities for producing countries to generate jobs, diversify their economies and increase public revenue.

However, the benefits depend largely on how these resources are managed.

Demand Continues to Rise

The UN says global demand for critical minerals is increasing rapidly as governments expand renewable energy capacity and battery technologies.

Electric vehicles require around six times more mineral inputs than conventional vehicles, while offshore wind farms require approximately 13 times more mineral resources than gas-fired power plants.

Demand for many critical minerals is expected to triple by 2030, leading many experts to compare their strategic importance with that of oil during the twentieth century.

Environmental and Social Challenges

Although mining is essential for the clean energy transition, poorly managed extraction can cause significant environmental damage.

These impacts include deforestation, water pollution, biodiversity loss, soil degradation and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Many mineral deposits are also located near Indigenous communities and environmentally sensitive ecosystems, increasing the need for responsible mining practices.

The UN stresses that the challenge is not whether critical minerals should be mined, but how they can be extracted sustainably while protecting people and the environment.

Security Concerns

The Security Council is also examining the growing security risks associated with critical minerals.

According to the UN, armed groups in some regions control valuable mineral deposits, while illegal mining and smuggling networks continue to finance conflict and fuel instability.

Weak governance has also contributed to corruption and environmental degradation in several resource-rich countries.

The Council is exploring whether stronger international cooperation and better governance can ensure that critical mineral wealth supports sustainable development rather than violence.

As global demand continues to grow, the UN says responsible management of critical minerals will be essential to achieving a cleaner energy future while promoting peace, economic development and environmental sustainability.
