Resort fined for razing hills to build swimming pool



Rangamati, Apr 03 - A mobile court on Wednesday fined Meghpolli Resort Tk2 lakh for constructing a swimming pool by cutting hills at Sajek Valley under Baghaichari upazila in Rangamati.

Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akhtar conducted a drive around 11am following the High Court verdict and fined its owner Shah Alam.

Besides, the swimming pool was declared closed for an indefinite period and the red flag was hung.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shireen Akhter said, "We have received the order of the High Court to stop the construction of swimming pools by cutting hills, and we implemented it along with other law enforcers."

Rights group, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed a writ petition on April 2 as news of cutting hills to construct a swimming pool by a resort was published in the newspaper on March 28.

Senior advocate Manjil Morshed moved the plea for HRPB.-UNB
