Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser, has called on the Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC) to focus on creating eco-friendly products, particularly using betel nut leaves, bamboo, and cane as sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.

During a meeting with BFIDC officials at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Rizwana emphasized the importance of leveraging local, environmentally-friendly materials in product design. According to a press release, she advocated for a shift toward sustainable production methods, which align with the government's broader goals of reducing environmental impact.

Rizwana also underscored the necessity of importing high-quality rubber tree clones to boost domestic production, which could support the development of sustainable furniture. "The government is committed to making affordable, sustainable, and modern-designed furniture available to all," she said.

In a bid to modernize BFIDC and make it more efficient in meeting the demand for eco-friendly products, Rizwana pointed out that the corporation’s existing limitations should first be identified and addressed. She further noted that BFIDC is revising its furniture designs and plans to allow customers to customize their orders according to personal preferences.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with BFIDC Chairman Md. Nasir Uddin and other senior officials.
