Experts for comprehensive efforts to eradicate tuberculosis

Experts at a divisional level views-sharing meeting here have stressed for comprehensive and well-coordinated efforts of all stakeholders for eradicating the completely curable disease of tuberculosis from the society.The National Anti-Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh (NATAB) organised the meeting on ‘Creating Social Movement for Preventing Tuberculosis’ at the conference room of a local hotel in the city on Saturday afternoon.With Rangpur district unit member of NATAB Akbar Hossain in the chair, Acting President of district Awami League and Zila Parishad Administrator Mamtaz Uddin Ahmmed attended the meeting as the chief guest.Senior Consultant of Rangpur Medical College and Hospital Dr Minhajul Islam
delivered the main keynote presentation on ‘Infection of Tuberculosis and its Prevention’ as the principal resource person.Junior Consultant of Rangpur Chest Disease Clinic Dr Mohammad Farhad Alam and Coordinator of NATAB Dr Wali Uddin Kibria also delivered separate presentations on tuberculosis infections and prevention.The resource persons put special emphasis on quick cough test, preventive vaccines and effective and full course intake of essential medicines for eradicating tuberculosis from the country.Presidents and General Secretaries of all eight district units of NATAB in Rangpur division, teachers, civil society members, religious and community leaders, professionals, journalists and elite also participated in the meeting.In his presentation, Dr Minhajul Islam elaborately narrated the reasons behind tuberculosis infection, its prevention and available free treatment facilities throughout the country.He discussed about micro-bacterial tuberculosis (MTB), multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR- TB), extremely drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) and anti- tuberculosis drug refampicin.Dr Minhajul also narrated the examination process of sputum of suspected patients using the GeneXpert Machine available at the Laboratory of Rangpur Chest Disease Clinic in diagnosing drug resistant tuberculosis.The participants lauded introduction of the full- fledged GeneXpert Laboratory equipped with ultra- modern GeneXpert machine, computers and other inputs at Rangpur Chest Disease Clinic for diagnosing MDR-TB, XDR-TB and tuberculosis in general.The chief guest called for launching a social movement in identifying tuberculosis patients to bring them under the cost- free Direct Observe Treatment Short Course facilities to free the country from the curable disease. -BSS, Rangpur
