The holy Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated all over Bangladesh on Thursday amid traditional festivities and religious fervor. The Eid, the greatest religious festival of Muslims, has come after 30 days of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan. However the Gaza war that has brought the Gazans to the brink of famine and has overshadowed the celebrations. The sighting of the Shawal moon on Wednesday evening marked the end of the month of Ramadan.

Eid congragations will be held at Eidgahs or mosques across the country. In Dhaka City the main Eid jamaat will be held at the National Eidgah at the Supreme Court premises. Several jamaats will be held at the baitul Mokarram National mosque in the morning.

The Eid congtrations epitomize the universal equality and brotherhood of mankind professed in Islam. Devotees irrespective of their caste or creed, differences of wealth or colour will join prayers beside each other. 

This Eid is marked by sharing of part of income of the rich with the poor in the form of the payment of zakat from their earnings and accumulated wealth to enable the latter to celebrate the festival. People will take delicious dishes at their homes and share those with their relatives and neighbours as a part of the festivity.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to receive cross sections of the people at Ganabhaban, her official residence, in the morning. 

BNP leaders however said that the Eid will be marked by sorrows because of sufferings of their leaders and workers.

The day is a closed national holiday. Millions of people from capital Dhaka have moved to their village homes during the past few days to celebrate the Eid with their dear and near ones.
