The
Bangladesh High Commission in Canada ushered in Bangla New Year 1432 with
vibrant celebrations that blended colours, culture, and community spirit. Held
at the High Commission premises in Ottawa, the Pahela Baishakh event brought
together diplomats, Canadian government officials, and members of the local
community for a joyful cultural gathering.
The evening was rich in tradition and festivity. Guests were treated to an array of classic Bengali dishes—panta bhaat, khichuri, and a variety of traditional pithas—while the rhythms of Bangladeshi folk music filled the air. The celebration also featured an exhibition of Jamdani sarees and crafts, showcasing Bangladesh’s artistic heritage.
Adding to the charm, guests adorned their hands with henna, engaged in warm conversations, and embraced the spirit of the New Year with heartfelt camaraderie.
“This day is about more than celebration. It is about shared hope, resilience, and a renewed commitment to peace, solidarity, and cultural understanding,” said High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan in her welcome remarks.
The event served as a cultural bridge, offering a glimpse into Bangladesh’s rich heritage and reinforcing bonds of friendship among nations. Diplomats and officials in attendance praised the hospitality, traditional cuisine, and the meaningful celebration of Pahela Baishakh.
