Concerns are growing among Bangladesh’s writers and publishers over the fate of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026, with many fearing that the upcoming national election, likely to be held before Ramadan in February, and the prevailing political uncertainty could disrupt the country’s largest literary event.

Traditionally held throughout February, the annual month-long fair is a cultural highlight that draws hundreds of publishers, authors, and thousands of visitors to the Bangla Academy grounds and adjacent areas.

However, as the holy month of Ramadan expected to begin on February 17–18 next year and the general election anticipated just days earlier, many in the publishing industry believe that sticking to the usual schedule could lead to logistical and security challenges, lower attendance, and financial losses for participating publishers.

In a recent Facebook post, prominent author and publisher Mohammad Nazimuddin urged the Bangla Academy and the country’s publishers to immediately determine the fair’s dates.

“The book fair could be held between January 10 and February 10, ending a few days before the election,” he wrote, adding that the authorities should start planning now to avoid uncertainty.

Joy Shahriar, founder and CEO of publishing house Aajob Prokash, also called for swift action from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangla Academy, and publishers’ associations across the political spectrum.

“For small but ambitious publishers like us, the book fair is the biggest opportunity of the year,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. “Since the election will take place before Ramadan, holding the fair from February 1 to 28 would not be wise. Deciding in September would allow everyone to prepare properly.”

He cautioned that without timely planning, the authorities risk repeating past delays.

“If you think there’s no need for a book fair this year, let us know that too,” Joy wrote on his Facebook post. “The truth is that Bangladesh’s creative book industry depends heavily on the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.”

Publishers say that with the political calendar already cleared months ahead, a decision made now could prevent confusion and help preserve one of the nation’s most significant cultural traditions. - UNB
