In mid-September the World Bank announced the termination of its controversial annual Doing Business index following an investigation that confirmed data irregularities, in large part prompted by a multi-year civil society campaign #RightsNotRankings.
World Bank trackers noted with concern that the spotlight almost immediately shifted to Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF’s Managing Director since 2019, who was at the World Bank when the 2018 index first caught public attention. Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF’s Managing Director since 2019, has been a bold leader in confronting the economic fallout of the pandemic, as well as in positioning the Fund as a global pioneer on climate change. The efforts now underway to remove her are not only unjust, but could hamstring the Fund’s management for years to come.
