A major fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta has left several people dead and injured following a serious incident on Saturday, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the fatalities and injuries but did not disclose the number of casualties or the cause of the incident, describing the situation as active and delicate.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed sympathy for the affected military personnel and their families, saying the federal government was working closely with Alberta’s provincial government and local authorities.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as “significant and tragic”, saying it had affected numerous military personnel. She also thanked first responders and those assisting with emergency operations.
The fire spread beyond the base’s perimeter fence, with strong winds contributing to its rapid spread, according to local authorities. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions responded, while the nearby community of Wainwright provided hospital and firefighting support.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canadian Armed Forces were involved in the response and investigation. Authorities had not released details about the circumstances that triggered the fire.
Conservative Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed support for those affected after speaking with Carney and McGuinty. He urged residents to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for emergency crews.
CFB Wainwright, one of Canada’s major military training facilities, is located near the town of Wainwright, approximately 180 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
The incident occurred days before a provincial vote in Alberta on whether to begin a process that could lead to the province seeking independence from Canada. The fire also affected advance voting arrangements at two polling stations, according to reports.
