A massive fire early Friday morning destroyed 61 shops at Shewrapara Kitchen Market in Dhaka, according to officials from the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD).

Rakibul Hasan, a duty officer at the FSCD headquarters, stated that the fire broke out at a shop in the market, located near Shewrapara Metro Station on Begum Rokeya Sarani.

The FSCD received the distress call at around 2:42 a.m., prompting three firefighting units to immediately head to the scene. Within moments, five additional units joined the operation. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately 45 minutes before managing to bring it under control. The fire was fully extinguished by 5:50 a.m., though it had already caused extensive damage.

While the exact cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage remain under investigation, initial reports indicate severe destruction.

Locals have described the aftermath as devastating. Many traders reported that their businesses were completely gutted, resulting in substantial financial losses.

Harunur Rashid, a local resident, shared his terrifying experience. "We woke up to smoke filling our bedroom around midnight. When we stepped outside, we saw the market engulfed in flames," he recalled.

Some shops located beneath a six-story building also suffered significant damage, further complicating the situation for the affected vendors.
