At least 11 shops were gutted and 10 people sustained burns in a fire at a local market in Chandpur Sadar upazila early Sunday.

Syed Muhammad Morshed Hossain, deputy assistant director of Chandpur (North) Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the fire began at one of the shops at Bohoria Bazar under Lakshmipur union around 2:30am.

A firefighting unit from the Sadar station rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control after one and half an hours of efforts, he said.

The fire-affected shops included clothing, restaurants, jewelry, sound system, battery, and tailoring shops.

Md. Shamsul Alam, senior station officer of Chandpur (South) Fire Station, said the fire might have originated from an electric short-circuit.

The affected-businessmen claimed the extent of damage would be around Tk one crore, reports UNB.
