At least 17 shops were destroyed in a fire that broke out at a T-shirt manufacturing market in the Chandana area of Gazipur city early Sunday.

According to the Fire Service and locals, the fire broke out in one of the tin-shed shops and quickly spread to adjacent stores, damaging valuables.

Locals initially tried to douse the flames but failed and alerted the fire service authorities.

Two firefighting units from Chourasta Modern Fire Service and another two from Joydebpur Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after about 45 minutes of effort.

Senior Station Officer of Chourasta Fire Service Station Md Iqbal Hasan said the cause of the fire could not be ascertained yet, reports UNB.

The extent of the losses will be assessed after an investigation, he said.
