A sharp increase in water levels of the Jamuna River in Sirajganj destroyed crops worth Tk five crore.
Heavy rain and onrush water from the hills flooded low-laying areas in the district damaging crops in 204 hectors of land.
According to the District Agricultural Extension Office, the crop land in 42 unions under seven upazila – Kazipur, Belkuchi, Chouhali, Shahjadpur, Tarash and Ullapara went under water due to the rise of water level in Jamuna river.
Ropa Aman, Bona Aman, advance winter vegetable, Aush, pulse, banana, sugarcane, and other crops were damaged. Losing the crops, some 4151 farmers are now in a deep financial crisis.
Babul Kumar Sutradhara, Deputy Director of district agriculture extension said that 952 hectares of cropland were flooded twice in August and September of this year. Of them, 204 hectares of cropland worth Tk5 crore were completely destroyed.
A list of victims in the region is being prepared. Hopefully, it will be possible to bring the affected farmers under the incentive program, he added.
