101 Dead in Nepal Floods After Relentless Monsoon Rains

Low-lying neighborhoods in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, were submerged on Sunday due to relentless monsoon rains that have claimed at least 101 lives across the country.


Deadly floods and landslides are common during South Asia's monsoon season, which runs from June to September. However, experts warn that climate change is exacerbating their frequency and severity.

Since Friday, large areas of eastern and central Nepal have been affected, with flash floods reported along several rivers and significant damage to the nation's highways.

"The death toll has reached 101, and 64 people are missing," said police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki. "We expect the toll to rise as search and rescue operations continue in the impacted areas."

The Kathmandu valley recorded an unprecedented 240 millimeters (9.4 inches) of rain within 24 hours, the highest since at least 1970, according to the country's weather bureau.
