Kylian Mbappe etched his name into World Cup history on Saturday by becoming the tournament's all-time leading scorer with his 22nd World Cup goal, surpassing Lionel Messi's previous record of 21.

The French captain reached the milestone during France's dramatic 4-3 defeat to England in the FIFA World Cup third-place playoff.

France appeared out of contention after falling 4-0 behind, but Mbappe sparked a spirited comeback. He scored in the 48th minute to draw level with Messi's tally of 21 World Cup goals.

After Bradley Barcola reduced the deficit further six minutes later, Mbappe struck again in the 66th minute, netting his record-breaking 22nd World Cup goal and moving clear as the tournament's greatest goalscorer.

The brace also took Mbappe's tally to 10 goals in the current tournament, putting him back on top of the Golden Boot standings.

England, however, held on for victory. Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick, while Jude Bellingham became England's all-time leading World Cup scorer with his seventh tournament goal. Ousmane Dembélé also scored for France, but the late rally fell short.

Although France missed out on the bronze medal, Mbappe delivered another historic performance, becoming the first player to score 22 goals in FIFA World Cup history at the age of 27.
