Winning start for champions Orlando Pirates
Johannesburg, Aug 2 - Orlando Pirates began their defence of the South African Premiership title with a 2-0 victory over promoted Milford in Soweto on Saturday.
Both goals came from South African internationals as Oswin Appollis put the Buccaneers ahead on 24 minutes and Tshepang Moremi struck after 85 minutes. Pirates won the richest African league for the first time in 14 years last season, pipping Mamelodi Sundowns by one point in a tense climax.
Winger Appollis broke the deadlock when his free-kick close to the penalty area was deflected past goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza. Pirates wasted scoring chances before striker Moremi broke clear, rounded Hleza and stroked the ball past a defender and into the net.
"I expected more given our domination. We had sufficient chances in the opening half to seal victory by half-time," said Morocco-born Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
"Some of our players were a little tired after the World Cup," added the former Fulham and Premier League defender. Pirates supplied eight of the South African 2026 World Cup squad. Substitute Wandile Duba scored twice as Kaizer Chiefs won 3-1 in Mbombela against Kruger United, the other club promoted to the top flight.BSS
