Manipuris playing vital role in sports arena: Momen

Dhaka, Dec 02 - The Manipuri community is playing a vital role and building a good reputation in the sporting arena at both national and international level, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Friday.

The government is working to improve their sports skills and socio-economic status, Momen said, speaking as chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of Maha Bangladesh Inter-Manipuri Football Champion Trophy at Abul Mal Abdul Muhit Sports Complex in Sylhet.

Bangladesh Manipuri Sports Association organised the tournament.

The foreign minister said that the government has plans to build four playgrounds in Sylhet.

Of them, two playgrounds have already been approved by the authority. He said that during the Awami League government, all kinds of sports have been significantly developed.

"Sports guide the youth in the right direction. Therefore, in order to protect the youths from drugs, they should be given the opportunity to participate in sports along with studies," Momen added.

Among others, Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Vice President of Sylhet District Sports Association Bijit Chowdhury, former president of Sylhet District Press Club Al Azad, were present on the occasion.-UNB
