Govt, civil society urged to work for global migration compact

Speakers at a seminar here today urged the government and civil society to work together for preparing the UN Global Compact on Migration and Refugees.

The UN General Assembly in 2016 adopted a resolution to prepare Global Compact on Migration and Refugees by the middle of 2018. In this regard consultations at international and regional levels have already been planned.

The seminar was organized by some non-government organizations including COAST and EquityBD from Bangladesh, Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) from Switzerland and Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

Chairman of PKSF Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman presided over the seminar at CIRDAP auditorium. Rustam Ali Farazi MP, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Huq, Dr. Atiq Rahman of BCAS, Abdusattar Esoev Deputy IoM and JU teacher Dr. Sharmind Neelormi, among others, were discussants at the seminar.

Sayed Aminul Haque from COAST presented the key note paper of the seminar moderated by Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD.

Dr. Atiq Rahaman suggested that MoFA coordinate with civil society to have effective dialogue while Abdusattar of IoM said that climate displaced people should be termed as “environmental migrants”.

Foreign Secretary Sahidul Haque said civil society and government need to work together for next two years to influence the global compacts process, reports BSS.
