Khaleda in critical state: Allow her treatment abroad -DAB

Dhaka, Aug 7 - Stating that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's physical condition is critical, the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) on Thursday urged the government to allow her to receive treatment at an advanced centre abroad on humanitarian ground.

In a statement DAB, the physicians’ body of BNP, also said there is nothing left in the country to treat the BNP chief under her current physical state for lack of necessary modern equipment.

‘We’re deeply worried that though the condition of Khaleda Zia is critical, she is being deprived of availing of a scope to receive advanced treatment,” reads the statement signed by DAB President Harun Al Rashid and secretary general Abdus Salam.

They said Khaleda Zia is very sick physically and she has been receiving treatment in the CCU of Evercare Hospital under a medical board.

The DAB leaders said the medical board opined that Khaleda is now at the crossroads of death and life as there is no other option to ensure her treatment in Bangladesh.

“So, it’s very important to take Khaleda Zia to an advanced centre abroad for treatment in a bid to save her life. We call on the government to give elderly person, Khaleda Zia, a scope to get medical treatment abroad as soon as possible considering humanitarian grounds and rising above politics,” they said.

The DAB leaders also urged the government to free Khaleda Zia by ensuring her right to get bail by the court, paving the way for her treatment abroad.

Or else, they warned that the government will be responsible if anything bad happens to her.

“What her medical team said about her condition is very alarming. We feel that as a top politician of the country, a former prime minister, a senior citizen and woman and as a prisoner getting proper medical treatment is part of her minimum human rights,” the DAB leaders said.

On August 9, Khaleda was admitted to Evercare Hospital for health checkups and treatment as she fell sick and she has been receiving treatment under close observation of doctors in a cabin at the hospital since then.

Khaleda has been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists distributed leaflets across the country today (Thursday) to press home their demand for the unconditional release of Khaleda and her advanced treatment abroad.

The party will also stage marches at city and district levels on Saturday demanding Khaleda’s treatment abroad.

Khaleda was sent to Old Dhaka Central Jail she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case by a lower court on February 8, 2018. On March 25, 2020, the BNP chief was released from jail upon an executive order on some conditions considering her age and humanitarian ground following an application by her family. - UNB
