Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year, will be celebrated across Bangladesh this year with the participation of all ethnic communities, including Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Manipuri, and Garo, marking a significant step toward national unity and cultural inclusivity.
The government has declared a one-day public holiday to commemorate the occasion, aiming to foster an atmosphere of inclusiveness in the celebration of the New Year, as announced in a press release by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs on Thursday night.
This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to make the Bengali New Year a truly national celebration, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the country. In the past, public holidays for Pahela Baishakh were primarily observed by the Bengali community, but this new move extends the holiday to all citizens, regardless of ethnic background.
By embracing the cultural traditions of various communities, the government seeks to highlight the country’s diverse heritage and enrich the festivities, showcasing the unique customs and practices of all ethnic groups within Bangladesh.
Additionally, the Ministry has introduced a special cultural program at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to mark Eid al-Fitr, which will focus on the multifaceted cultures of the nation. This initiative underscores the importance of giving equal representation to the diverse cultural identities of all communities, reinforcing the spirit of unity and inclusivity.
