Sources reveal that three doctors at the health complex have been absent for years, with no replacements appointed due to the positions not being officially declared vacant by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Medical Officer Mridul Kanti has been absent since 2014, Saima Nahid Shanta since 2021, and Golam Rasul since 2019. Despite multiple notifications from the hospital administration, DGHS has yet to take action, leaving the positions unfilled.
This chronic shortage has left the remaining 16 physicians, out of 32 total positions, struggling to meet the overwhelming demand for medical care. With some doctors on deputation or holding administrative roles, only nine doctors are available to manage the hospital's daily operations. The lack of staff has led to long queues of patients at the outpatient department, with overcrowding becoming a daily issue.
Dr. Saidur Rahman Emon, a physician in the outpatient department, commented, “The number of patients far exceeds the available doctors here. It’s a constant challenge to provide care.”
Dr. Ahsanul Mizan Rumi, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, acknowledged the issue and stated, “I’ve informed higher authorities about the absent doctors and am hopeful the situation will be addressed soon.”
