Experts have urged all stakeholders to take strong measures to ensure human rights across workplaces, particularly in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, in line with international standards.

Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmmed, Chief of the Labour Reform Commission and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), speaking via teleconference, stressed that the mere existence of laws is not enough to prevent workplace human rights violations; effective implementation and monitoring are equally crucial.

He made the remarks at the concluding session of the two-day Capacity Development Training Workshop for Journalists on Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in the RMG Sector, held at a city hotel.

Highlighting the role of the media, Sultan Ahmmed said both national and international outlets must remain vigilant to hold stakeholders accountable for proper human rights compliance.

The workshop, organised by BILS with support from Mondial FNV, brought together 31 journalists from various newspapers and news agencies.

Other speakers included Mondial FNV consultant Md Shahinur Rahman, Bangladesh Labour Rights Journalists Forum (BLRJF) President Kazi Abdul Hannan, researcher and Associate Professor at Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology Aurangzeb Akand, BILS Director Nazma Yasmin, Deputy Director Md Yusuf Al-Mamun, and Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) Office Secretary Zakir Hossain.

The panel emphasized that journalists must stay informed about policies and laws protecting human and labour rights. Trade unions and affiliated organisations can support media efforts through training, workshops, policy dialogues, workplace visits, and awareness campaigns.
