IGP asks cops to tighten security during Eid, Durga Puja

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker on Thursday directed the policemen to remain alert and perform their duties carefully to ensure peaceful celebrations of Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja.   “You have to stay alert so that no evil quarter can destablise the law-and-order situation across the country using ICT war crimes verdicts as well as by militant and terrorist acts,” he said.   The IGP gave the directives to his force members while presiding over two separate meetings –– one on security measures during Eid-ul-Azha and the other on security steps during Durga Puja –– held at the Police Headquarters.   Hasan Mahmud also ordered policemen to remain alert so that trucks loaded with sacrificial animals can move smoothly ahead of Eid and that no rawhide is smuggled out of the country.   The five-day Durga Puja will be celebrated at over 28,000 mandaps across the country from October 10-14. Police will provide a foolproof security in all the Puja mandaps in coordination with other law enforcers.   Meeting sources said leaders of the Hindu community, who were present in the meeting on security during Durga Puja, expressed their satisfaction over the security measures taken by police.   The meeting on Eid-ul-Azha took various decisions, including taking stern action to check extortion, hijacking and terrorist acts across country, on the eve the second largest festival of the Muslims.   Senior police officers of the Police Headquarters, heads of Special Branch and Criminal Investigation Department, commissioners of different metropolitan polices, Range DIGs and senior officers of different intelligence agencies attended the meetings. – UNB
