Imams can play role vital in eliminating tuberculosis: Speakers

Imams could play the most vital role in creating social awareness to detect tuberculosis infected patients for bringing them under free treatment facilities to eliminate the completely curable disease, speakers said on Tuesday.

National Anti-Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh (NATAB) organised the views-sharing meeting on ‘Role of Imams in Controlling Tuberculosis through Creating Awareness’ at Mahiganj Base Educare Centre in the city.

Junior Consultant of Tazhat Chest Disease Hospital in Rangpur Dr Farhad Alam attended the meeting as the chief guest with noted social worker Alamgir Hossain Chowhdury in the chair.

Member of the district unit of NATAB Hossain Abed Ali and Director of Mahiganj Base Educare Centre Abdur Rahman Babu addressed the meeting, participated by 30 Imams of different mosques, as the special guest.

Retired Medical Officer of the Health Department Dr Akbar Hossain presented the keynote paper narrating the reasons behind tuberculosis infection, its prevention and available free treatment facilities throughout the country.

He narrated smear positive, smear negative, multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), extremely drug resistant tuberculosis and functioning of GeneXpert Machine at Tazhat Chest Disease Hospital in easily diagnosing MDR-TB and treatment process.

He also discussed on micro-bacterial tuberculosis (MTB), anti-tuberculosis drug refampicin and examination process of sputum of suspected patients using the computerized GeneXpert machine.

The speakers highly lauded the setting up of the full-fledged GeneXpert Laboratory equipped with ultra-modern computerized GeneXpert machine and other inputs in Rangpur for diagnosing MDR-TB and tuberculosis in general.

They put emphasis on quick cough test, taking preventive vaccines and effective and full course intake of essential medicines for eradicating the completely curable disease of tuberculosis from the country.

The chief guest urged the Imams for creating social awareness in identifying tuberculosis patients to bring them under the cost-free Direct Observe Treatment Short Course facilities to free the country from the curable disease.

Terming the Imams as the most respectable persons in the society, he called upon them to play their effective role in creating social awareness to accelerate early diagnosis of tuberculosis infection for bringing the patients under proper treatment. -BSS, Rangpur
