PM Pledges Full Support For Garment Sector Growth

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday assured garment exporters of the government's full support for the sustainable growth of the ready-made garment (RMG) sector and directed the authorities concerned to swiftly address key challenges facing the industry.

“The government will do whatever is necessary for the growth of the garment industry. Solving the problems faced by businesses is also our responsibility, and we are committed to fulfilling that responsibility,” the prime minister said.

He made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.

The BGMEA delegation, led by its President Mahmud Hasan Khan, briefed the prime minister on the challenges confronting the country's largest export sector, particularly the need for an uninterrupted supply of gas and electricity.

The business leaders also placed a series of short- and long-term proposals aimed at strengthening the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of the garment industry.

After hearing their concerns, Tarique Rahman instructed the relevant ministries and government agencies to take immediate steps to resolve issues that can be addressed without delay.

“We have already started working to solve your problems. Many of these are long-standing issues that have accumulated over the years. Those that can be resolved now will be addressed immediately,” he said.

Describing the garment industry as one of the main pillars of Bangladesh's economy, the prime minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to its sustainable development.

He said infrastructure development projects supporting the sector are already underway and would further strengthen the economy once completed.

“Infrastructure development for the garment sector is progressing. Once these improvements are completed, they will strengthen the economy and help Bangladesh move forward. We are working sincerely for the sector's sustainable growth,” he added.

The prime minister also said the government had introduced a business-friendly budget to promote trade, investment and industrial expansion.

Following the meeting, the BGMEA delegation presented a commemorative crest to the prime minister.

Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Adviser on Labour and Employment Mahdi Amin, BNP Special Secretary Belayet Hossain and senior BGMEA leaders were also present.
