The leaders of Nirapon, an organization dedicated to improving worker safety across Bangladesh’s factory sector, met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday at the State Guest House Jamuna.

Simone Sultana, Chair of Nirapon, and Tapan Chowdhury, Independent Director of the organization, led the delegation. Also present at the meeting were representatives from major Western brands and retailers, as noted in a press release from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

During the meeting, the Chief Adviser reiterated the interim government's commitment to advancing crucial labour reforms aimed at aligning Bangladesh’s labour laws with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards. He highlighted the government's ongoing efforts, stating, “We have already taken significant steps, and you will witness tangible changes very soon.”

Lutfey Siddiqi, Special Envoy of the Chief Adviser, added that an 18-point agreement signed between the government, labour unions, and manufacturers had already contributed to sector stability and a rise in garment exports.

Simone Sultana thanked the Chief Adviser for his role in spearheading reforms within the garment industry, acknowledging that Nirapon, in collaboration with local partners like BRAC and Amader Kotha, is at the forefront of developing innovative tools to enhance factory safety.

Representatives from Western brands also expressed their satisfaction with the ongoing improvements in factory safety, recognizing the positive impact these reforms are having on both workers and the industry as a whole.

Other attendees included Lamiya Morshed, Senior Secretary and Principal Coordinator for SDG Affairs, and Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA).
