Bangladesh has led the adoption of a landmark resolution on sustainable bioeconomy at the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, held in Bangkok.

Titled “Supporting the Transition Towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Asia and the Pacific,” the resolution was introduced by Bangladesh and adopted unanimously by member states. The move marks a notable diplomatic achievement, underscoring the country’s growing role in shaping regional development priorities.

The resolution aligns with Bangladesh’s broader goals of promoting inclusive, innovation-driven growth. It emphasises circular economy practices, efficient use of natural resources, and greater integration of science and technology to support sustainable economic transformation across the region.

The Bangladesh delegation was led by Faqir Mahbub Anam, who highlighted the importance of bioeconomy in addressing emerging global challenges. He described it as a practical pathway to tackle climate risks, strengthen resilience, and ensure inclusive development.

The initiative received strong backing from countries across Asia and the Pacific, including India, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, Mongolia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan, reflecting a broad regional consensus on the need for sustainable economic models.

In addition to the bioeconomy resolution, the session also adopted the Baku-Bangkok Declaration on strengthening social development for inclusive societies, reaffirming a shared commitment to equitable and sustainable growth for all age groups.
