Hormuz Closure Could Trigger Global Crisis: UN Warns

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has warned that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could spark a global humanitarian crisis by severely disrupting fertiliser supply chains.

UNOPS Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva said continued maritime restrictions in the vital shipping route risk pushing millions of people into deeper food insecurity, potentially triggering widespread hunger and famine.

He noted that prices of key raw materials used in fertiliser production have already surged to record levels, reflecting growing strain on global supply systems and raising concerns over agricultural output in many regions.

UNOPS stressed that uninterrupted access to fertilisers is critical for maintaining global food production, warning that any sustained disruption could have cascading effects on food availability and prices worldwide.

The agency called for urgent diplomatic engagement to ease tensions and restore safe passage through the Strait, underlining the need to ensure the steady flow of essential commodities to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
