Speakers at an United Nations Day programme in Dhaka on Friday recalled the services of the world body for the promotion of security, peace, human rights and sustainable development and called for strengthening its role in conflict resolution.
The programme was organised by the United Nations Foundation of Bangladesh at the Holiday Inn hotel. Renowned journalist and editor of Greenwatch Dhaka, Mostafa Kamal Majumder was the chief guest at the function presided over by Advocate Babul Hawlader.
The chief guest underlined the important role played by the Unied Nations amid serious constraints and said that efforts should continue to strengthen its role to become more effective in the coming days.
He said that a cynical view of the UN because of its failure to resolve the Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas and Israel-Lebanon wars would lead us to nowhere. The UN plays the strongest humanitarian role in reaching food, medicine and providing to displaced people.
The world body also puts up significant pressures on tyrants to stop violating human rights and discourages others from taking such roles against their own peoples. On the health and environment fronts its services to the humanity is unparalleled, he added.
The function was also addressed by special guests Sheikh Mohiuddin, member, International Bar Association, Jahangir Alam Prodhan, ex-GS, Dhaka Union of Journalists, Zakir Hossain, ex publicity secretary, BFUJ and president, Bangladesh civil rights society, Chashi Mamun, united front, Yunus Sohag, Bangladesj Sangbadpatra Shilpa Parishad, Adv Mofizur Rahman Mizu, Mr Rifat general secretary of the Foundation, Sumaiya Mostaque, Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan, assistant secretary, Abul Kalam Azad, VP of the Foundation.
The speakers vented their anger against the UN for its failure to protect Palestinians and the Lebanese people from Israeli aggression.
At the beginning of the programme a message from Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the UN on the United Nations Day was read out.
