Britain, France, and Ukraine have agreed to collaborate on a ceasefire plan to present to the United States, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Sunday ahead of a European leaders’ summit focused on ending the war in Ukraine.

The summit, which follows a tense exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is aimed at re-engaging peace talks. Starmer expressed his goal to act as a bridge between leaders, hoping to restore diplomatic efforts rather than escalate tensions.

“We’ve agreed that the UK, along with France and possibly others, will work with Ukraine on a plan to end the fighting, which we will then discuss with the United States,” Starmer said. He added that both he and French President Emmanuel Macron had spoken to Trump since Friday’s dispute.

The summit, hosted in London, will also address military support for Ukraine, including the establishment of a European peacekeeping force. Starmer emphasized the need for lasting peace, highlighting the risk of Russian President Vladimir Putin resuming aggression if the ceasefire is not adequately enforced.

European leaders are also pledging to bolster military spending, with Starmer committing to raise UK defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, and other nations, including the Czech Republic, considering similar increases.

Despite challenges, including Trump’s shifting stance on Ukraine, European leaders are reaffirming their support for Zelenskyy, with many showing solidarity after the recent diplomatic setbacks. Starmer emphasized the importance of Europe taking a leading role in negotiations, noting that securing peace requires a credible and lasting deal.

The summit also includes leaders from various European countries, as well as representatives from NATO and the European Commission, all working to strengthen Ukraine's position and secure peace in the region.
