Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today attended the funeral mass of Pope Francis at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
The funeral, following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday at the age of 88, drew dozens of world leaders and dignitaries, including US President Donald Trump and Prince William.
Professor Yunus was seated among top global leaders at the ceremony. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni were also present.
Italian police reported that about 140,000 people had gathered in St Peter’s Square and surrounding streets. Around an hour before the ceremony, the square, which holds about 40,000 people, was nearly full, while Via della Conciliazione and nearby areas hosted over 100,000 people.
Pope Francis had been a great admirer of Professor Yunus’s work for marginalised communities and his vision of a 'Three Zero World'—a world without poverty, unemployment, and carbon emissions.
The Vatican had also partnered with the 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate to launch a joint Three Zero Initiative in Rome.
