In one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, killing at least 241 people. One passenger has been found alive and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed that the sole survivor, seated in 11A, was rescued and admitted to a local hospital. "Rescue operations are still underway, and we cannot confirm the final death toll," he said.
Authorities have so far recovered 204 bodies from the crash site, according to local police. It remains unclear whether all of the deceased were passengers or if some were on the ground when the aircraft crashed into a residential area.
The ill-fated Flight 171 was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport with 232 passengers and 10 crew members on board, including 53 British nationals and 11 children.
The aircraft slammed into a hostel building on the city’s outskirts, igniting a massive blaze and sending thick black smoke over the neighborhood. At least five medical students on the ground were also killed, reports suggest.
Footage from the scene shows twisted debris inside the hostel's dining area, with untouched plates of food still visible—a haunting snapshot of a moment frozen in tragedy.
Rescue teams are continuing to search the wreckage, while investigators begin to examine the cause of the crash.
