The government has appointed Advocate Md Tajul Islam as the Chief Prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs announced the appointment in a notification issued on Thursday, September 5.

As Chief Prosecutor, Advocate Tajul Islam will hold the same status as the Attorney General. The new team of prosecutors includes:

  • Mizanul Islam (Additional Attorney General rank)
  • Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim (Deputy Attorney General)
  • BM Sultan Mahmud (Deputy Attorney General)
  • Abdullah Al Noman (Assistant Attorney General)

The notification states that this appointment will take effect soon.

This move follows the resignation of 11 prosecutors, including the Chief Prosecutor of the ICT, on August 13. Previously, Advocate Tajul Islam served as the deputy to Barrister Abdur Razzaque in the defense team for former leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami at the ICT. After Razzaque left for the UK under the previous Awami League government, Tajul Islam assumed the role of lead counsel for the Jamaat defense team.
