Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul speaks to reporters at the Foreign Service Academy on 24 July 2025.
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said that police officers are now legally required to disclose their identity and clearly state the reason before arresting any individual.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Thursday.
Nazrul stated that, under the newly approved amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), law enforcement must also inform the arrested person's family members and lawyer within 12 hours of taking them into custody.
He explained that the amendment aims to prevent arbitrary detentions and politically motivated cases.
Earlier in the day, the cabinet division gave in-principle approval to the amendment during a meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus.
The reform comes in response to widespread allegations of false and fabricated cases being filed following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August last year.
As per the constitution and CrPC, any arrested person must be produced before the nearest magistrate within 24 hours.
