Playwright Selim Al Deen’s death anniversary Saturday
The 15th death anniversary of legendary playwright Selim Al Deen on Saturday.
The 15th death anniversary of legendary playwright Selim Al Deen, who played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s theatre movement, is being observed Saturday with due respect and honour.
Selim Al Deen was born in village Senerkhil of Sonagazi Upazila, Feni on August 18, 1949.
In 1974, he joined the Bangla department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) as a lecturer. The drama and dramatics department of JU was opened under his guidance in 1986. He was the founding chairman of the department.
The versatile author was a pioneer playwright of post-Rabindranath Bengali literature. He played a great role in establishing the mainstream in drama for this region. Al Deen had also written the first Bengali dictionary on dramatics.
He enriched Bangladeshi theatre writing plays, namely Shakuntala, Kittankhola, Keramat Mangal, Hathadai, Chaka, Jaibati Kainyar Mon, Hargaj, Bonpangshul, Nimojjon and Dhaboman.
He received different awards, including National Film Award in 1994, Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1984, Ekushey Padak in 2007 and others.
