Bangladeshi mountaineer Ikramul Hasan Shakil has formally handed over the national flag he carried to the summit of Mount Elbrus, marking the successful completion of the Bangladesh–Russia Friendship Expedition 2026.
The flag handover ceremony, accompanied by a press conference and photo exhibition, was held at Russian House in Dhaka on Thursday (November 5), celebrating the expedition titled “Ashes & Ice: The Dormant Giant Expedition 2026”.
Shakil reached the summit of Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Russia and Europe, on September 26, overcoming heavy snowfall, freezing winds and poor visibility. Standing at 5,642 metres, the mountain is one of the world's renowned mountaineering destinations.
At the event, Shakil shared his experiences through a presentation and a video documenting the expedition. He recounted the challenges faced during the ascent and expressed gratitude to Russian House in Dhaka for its support and cooperation.
The press conference was led by Enam Ul Haque, founder of the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC).
A key highlight of the programme was the formal handover of the Bangladesh national flag that Shakil had carried to the summit, marking a significant moment for the country's mountaineering community.
The event also featured the inauguration of a photography exhibition showcasing memorable moments from the expedition. Alexandra A. Khlevnoy, director of Russian House in Dhaka, inaugurated the exhibition by cutting a ribbon alongside Shakil and other distinguished guests.
Visitors had the opportunity to explore photographs documenting the challenging journey and the mountaineer's experience on the mountain.
The expedition highlighted the spirit of determination, endurance and international cooperation, while also underscoring the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and Russia.
