A special event marking the 53rd anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Russia and Bangladesh was held on 25 January at the Russian House in Dhaka and organized in cooperation with the Soviet Alumni Association of Bangladesh (SAAB). The event celebrated the deep and enduring bond between the two nations, rooted in the pivotal role played by the Soviet Union during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.

In his welcome speech, Mr. Pavel Dvoychenkov, Head of the Russian House in Dhaka, emphasized the Soviet Union's unwavering support during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence and its continued commitment in the years that followed. "The Soviet people, leaders, and military played a crucial role in supporting Bangladesh diplomatically and politically, ensuring that the voice of the struggling people was heard worldwide," said Mr. Dvoychenkov.

He further underscored the significance of educational cooperation, with thousands of Bangladeshi students having received full scholarships to study in Russia. Today, over 6,000 Soviet and Russian graduates contribute to Bangladesh’s development across sectors such as education, technology, and industry, building enduring bridges of knowledge and friendship between the two nations.

Mr. Anton Chernov, Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangladesh, highlighted the longstanding and productive partnership between Russia and Bangladesh. "Our countries have enjoyed a fruitful relationship in South Asia for over half a century, founded on the strong pillars of friendship, equality, and mutual respect, making it a model of cooperation in the region," he remarked.

Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, President of the Soviet Alumni Association of Bangladesh, and other speakers underscored the significance of the historic day. They gratefully acknowledged the contributions of the Soviet Union and present-day Russia in fostering development cooperation, from the time of the Liberation War to the reconstruction of Bangladesh. They noted that Russia’s support not only helped build an experienced civil society but also instilled values of humanity and inclusivity in creating a non-discriminatory society.

The event also celebrated ongoing collaboration between the two nations in areas such as education, trade, defense, technology, and energy. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was recognized as a landmark project symbolizing Russia’s unwavering support for Bangladesh’s sustainable development.

The celebration concluded with a vibrant cultural program featuring traditional Russian and Bangladeshi songs and dances, showcasing the rich cultural exchange between the two nations.
