Bangladeshi Film Makes Historic Venice Festival Debut

Bangladeshi cinema has achieved a historic milestone as filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain's latest feature, The Difficult Bride, has become the first full-length Bangladeshi film selected for the Orizzonti Competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

The psychological horror film will have its world premiere at the prestigious festival, scheduled to take place on the Venice Lido in Italy from September 2 to 12. Established in 1932, the Venice International Film Festival is the world's oldest film festival, while its Orizzonti (Horizons) section showcases innovative filmmaking and emerging cinematic voices.

Set around a historic beauty salon in Dhaka, The Difficult Bride follows a young bride-to-be whose wedding preparations take a disturbing turn as she is drawn into a mysterious world shaped by beauty, faith, memory and fear.

The film stars newcomer Zaineen Chowdhury Karim in the lead role alongside Rikita Nondine Shimu, Sunerah Kamal, Azmeri Haque Badhon, Shatabdi Wadud, Saberi Alam and Mohammed Bari.

Describing the selection as a dream come true, Rubaiyat Hossain said the recognition is a proud moment for Bangladeshi cinema and reflects years of dedication by the entire cast and crew. She expressed hope that the achievement would open more opportunities for Bangladeshi filmmakers on the global stage.

The Difficult Bride is an international co-production involving Bangladesh, France, Germany, Norway and Portugal, with global distribution handled by Films Boutique. Its selection marks a significant breakthrough for Bangladesh's growing presence at major international film festivals.
