Special film screening at Alliance Francaise Dhaka in commemoration of the Language Martyrs Day.
In commemoration of Language Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day, Alliance Française de Dhaka hosted a special film screening at its Nouvelle Vague Auditorium, featuring works by independent filmmaker ABM Nazmul Huda that highlight the importance of mother tongues and linguistic diversity.
The screening presented the documentary film Mro Fairytale, which chronicles the journey behind the publication of the first literary book in the Mro language. The documentary received a National Film Grant in recognition of its cultural significance. The second film, The Consequence, is a short animated production based on a traditional Mro folktale. It marks the first animated film made in the Mro language and is believed to be the first animated film produced in Bangladesh in any language other than Bangla.
February holds profound significance in Bangladesh as the month of language remembrance. The nation observes 21 February in tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in 1952 to protect their mother tongue. Bangladesh is home to more than 41 languages spoken by diverse communities, some of which are endangered, lacking written scripts or sufficient numbers of speakers.
Language remains one of humanity’s most influential and defining achievements. Through his films, the filmmaker seeks to inspire greater awareness and responsibility toward preserving and practicing mother tongues. The works also highlight the rich cultural diversity of Bangladesh, resonating with both local and international audiences. The filmmaker emphasizes that peaceful coexistence is possible when cultural diversity is respected and nurtured in a healthy and inclusive manner.
