The body of Nahida Sultana Brishty, a Bangladeshi doctoral student who was murdered in the United States, arrived in Dhaka on Saturday morning, bringing grief and shock to her family, friends and academic community.
Her body landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 9:10am on an Emirates Airlines flight, airport officials confirmed.
Brishty had been pursuing her PhD studies at University of South Florida before she was tragically killed in a case that drew attention among Bangladeshi students living abroad.
Her remains were flown from Orlando International Airport on Thursday night aboard an Emirates flight bound for Dhaka. Officials from the Bangladesh Consulate in Miami were present during the departure process and assisted with the formalities related to the transportation of the body.
The incident came to light after Brishty and fellow Bangladeshi PhD student Zamil Ahmed Limon went missing on April 16 in the United States. Concern grew after friends and acquaintances were unable to contact them.
The following day, one of their friends informed university authorities, prompting an investigation. Police later confirmed that both students had been murdered.
US authorities subsequently arrested Hisham Saleh Abugharbieh, identified as Limon’s roommate and a US citizen, in connection with the killings. Investigators are continuing legal proceedings and examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The body of Limon, who was also killed in the same incident, was brought back to Bangladesh on May 4.
The deaths of the two students have sparked mourning among Bangladeshis at home and abroad, particularly within the student community, where many expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of two promising researchers pursuing higher education overseas.
