President Mohammed Shahabuddin is likely to resign soon, citing health reasons, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Sources in the government and the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said senior party leaders have conveyed their desire for the President to step down. At the same time, discussions are reportedly underway over a possible successor.

A source familiar with the communication, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the President's resignation could come in the near future. However, neither Bangabhaban nor the government had issued any official statement confirming the development as of Wednesday.

Several names have been discussed as potential candidates for the presidency. While senior BNP leaders had previously been mentioned, recent discussions have also focused on a senior secretary currently serving in a key government position on a contractual basis. No final decision has reportedly been made.

Under Article 50(3) of the Constitution, the President may resign by submitting a written resignation to the Speaker of Parliament. Article 54 provides that if the presidency becomes vacant, the Speaker will perform the duties of the President until a successor is elected.

The Constitution further requires, under Article 123, that a new president be elected by Parliament within 90 days of the vacancy. As the ruling BNP holds a parliamentary majority, its nominee would be expected to secure the presidency.

Sources at Bangabhaban also indicated that President Shahabuddin has privately signalled to close aides that he may leave office soon. Following his resignation, he is expected to take a period of rest and may travel abroad for medical treatment.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh's 22nd President on 24 April 2023 after being elected unopposed. His five-year term is scheduled to expire in April 2028.

His tenure continued through the country's political transition following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024 and the formation of the interim administration. After the BNP returned to power, speculation over his future remained, although no formal demand for his resignation had been made publicly.

If he resigns, it would trigger the election of a new head of state and mark another significant constitutional transition. The appointment is expected to carry added political importance, as the next President will serve during the country's upcoming general election.
