Security Tightened Nationwide Ahead of August 5

The government has placed law enforcement and security agencies on high alert across the country ahead of August 5 to ensure public safety and maintain law and order, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, the minister said all necessary measures had been taken to ensure a peaceful and secure environment in view of the significance of the day.

He said the Home Ministry had instructed police and other security agencies to strengthen vigilance and remain fully prepared to respond to any untoward incidents.

As part of the directives, police vehicles have been instructed not to remain unattended, while security personnel have been asked to maintain constant vigilance to ensure continuous monitoring and rapid response.

Salahuddin Ahmed said a high-level coordination meeting involving the government, law enforcement agencies and other relevant stakeholders would be held to review the overall security situation and finalise arrangements for August 5.

Referring to the recent recovery of bomb-like objects in Motijheel and Ashulia, the minister said the incidents appeared to be attempts to create panic and disrupt public order.

He said a coordinated investigation is underway to identify those responsible and determine whether the incidents are linked.

The minister also said intelligence and law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring the activities of banned organisations and certain groups operating from abroad.

He added that further details would be disclosed after the investigations are completed.
