State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari today said the government is making efforts to build a neutral, honest and efficient civil service.

He made the remarks while addressing a certificate-awarding and closing ceremony of the 146th, 147th, and 148th Law and Administration Courses at Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy here.

In his speech, the state minister said the government is committed to institutionalising democracy.

"If fascism takes root, the country's civil service will be ruined once again. Prolonged fascism created problems among government officials and destroyed the country's institutions," he said.

Consequently, Bari said, officials have deviated from the very objectives with which they joined the service.

He said it is not the civil service's job to implement the government's political agenda but its duty is to implement government policies.

The state minister emphasised that integrity and neutrality are of utmost importance.

"There is no room for despair. The responsibility of building this nation lies with you," he said.

He said the government assumed office amid a fragile economy and despite that, it has increased the salaries of officials.

"The country will move forward only if each of us performs our duties. Several hundred of people sacrificed their lives in the July mass uprising because they wanted to ensure that discrimination never returns to this country," Bari said.

It does not matter what one gains personally but matters is what one contributes to society, he said.

"We must move forward by prioritising honesty and efficiency in all levels," he added.

Dr Mohammad Altaf-Ul-Alam, Rector of Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy, presided over the event.

Officials from different departments and wings of the ministry were present, reports BSS.
