Awami League to form govt for 4th consecutive term

Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League is going to form a new government for the fourth consecutive term.

The Awami League has got a landslide victory in the 12th parliamentary election held on Sunday (January 7).

As a result, Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League is going to form a new government for the fourth consecutive term.

Till 1:00am on Monday when the report was updated, the Election Commission announced results of 288 constituencies.

Of which, the Awami League won 225 seats and Jatiya Party won 11 seats. Independent candidates won 62 seats.

Through the landslide victory, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has made a history and is going to be the prime minister of Bangladesh for the fifth term.

The balloting began at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any break.

Voting was held in 299 seats out of 300 as the EC earlier postponed the election to Naogaon-2 due to independent candidate Aminul Islam's death.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been elected unofficially in Gopalganj-3 constituency.

The Awami League president got 2,49,962 votes while her nearest contestant Sheikh Abul Kalam  from National People’s Party got 469 votes.

At a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said the country witnessed a turnout of about 40 per cent voters in the 12th national election.
