Narsingdi prison break: 2 more escaped prisoners held with looted weapons
Narsingdi, Aug 01 - Two more escaped prisoners of the Narsingdi jail have been arrested along with looted weapons.
The arrestees are Md Ariful Islam, 21, son of Abu Bakar Siddque of Kamargaon village of Nandail upazila of Mymensingh district and Md Shafiq, 24, son of Maram Ali of Feraizakandi area of Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria district.
Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, superintendent of Narsingdi police (SP), confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.
With this, so far 186 people were arrested in this connection.
The SP said, Ariful and Shafiq confessed that they were directly involved in the attack on the district jail, shot at the police with the intention of killing them after looting the weapons.
They also admitted the involvement of some BNP leaders behind the attack, added the Police Super.
On July 19, a mob carried out an attack on the district jail, vandalised valuables, and looted 85 firearms and over 8, 015 rounds of bullets.
Taking advantage of the turmoil, 826 inmates including nine militants escaped.
On July 21, the district administration carried out publicity by loudspeakers asking the escaped inmates to surrender before the court.
Responding to the call 575 inmates surrendered till August 1.
On the other hand, 51 out of 85 looted arms and 1,091 rounds of looted bullets were recovered.
Meanwhile, a total of 77 officials including jail super and prison guards were suspended in connection with the attack.
Besides, a departmental case was filed against each of them due to negligence of duty, he added.-UNB
