Protest at DU Blames India for Bangladesh Floods
A rally was held at Dhaka University on Wednesday night, accusing India of causing recent flooding in Bangladesh through the release of water from the Dumbur and Gajoldoba dams. The protest, organized by the "General Students of Dhaka University" at the Raju Memorial Sculpture, called for a fair distribution of water from shared international rivers.
Hasib Al Islam, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, criticized the Bangladeshi government’s alignment with India, alleging it has led to unfair water management and worsening conditions for Bangladesh. “India’s aggressive actions and unequal agreements must end,” he declared. “The current government, disconnected from the people, has betrayed us.”
Sultana from the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies accused India of engineering artificial floods. “This is not a natural disaster; it’s a man-made crisis,” she said, urging for a fair share of river water.
AB Jubayer of the Islamic Studies Department added that India's management of the 54 shared rivers, including the construction of dams, has exacerbated flooding while depriving Bangladesh of crucial water resources during dry periods. “India’s double standard in dam management is unacceptable,” he stated.
Following the rally, students marched around the Vice-Chancellor's office before reconvening at the Raju Sculpture to conclude their protest.
