Chhanamukhi of Brahmanbaria

Chhanamukhi, a distinctive variety of sweetmeat exclusive to Brahmanbaria district, has been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Ministry of Industries, paving the way for potential international exports.

The Directorate of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) notified the district administration of this achievement on September 24, confirmed Md Saiful Islam, Additional District Administrator of Brahmanbaria. The local administration submitted its application for GI status in April 2022, and the sweetmeat was officially registered in April of this year.

GI status highlights a product's uniqueness to a specific geographic area, ensuring that replicas cannot be produced elsewhere. According to the Brahmanbaria district administration's website, Chhanamukhi has its roots in the region dating back to the British colonial period.

Producing just one kilogram of Chhanamukhi requires an impressive 7-8 liters of cow's milk and involves several days of meticulous processing. Dulal Chandra Modok, owner of Adarsha Matri Bhandar sweet shop in Brahmanbaria town, noted that a kilogram is priced at Tk800, reflecting both the quality and craftsmanship involved in its creation.

This recognition not only celebrates the cultural heritage of Brahmanbaria but also opens new avenues for local artisans to showcase their work on a global stage.
