At least 50 persons were injured in a clash between workers from two factories inside the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (EPZ) on Saturday.

The clash broke out when a worker from one factory had an argument with a colleague from another factory regarding the opening of a factory’s main gate. The disagreement escalated into a full-fledged clash, with workers from one side reportedly throwing stones at the other, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the EPZ Police Station Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman.

As the violence spread, several workers were injured and rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. By noon, 18 individuals were admitted, with two reported to be in critical condition, reports UNB.

“The situation is currently under control, with both the police and army present at the scene,” added the OC.

Chattogram EPZ Executive Director Abdus Sobhan said, “Several people were injured in this. Law enforcement has been deployed to control the situation.”

Meanwhile, it was learnt that workers have been protesting in various factories of the EPZ for the past few days, alleging that they were not paid according to the new structure.
