The health of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, currently receiving treatment at a specialized hospital in London, has significantly improved, according to party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a press conference at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Tuesday, Fakhrul provided an update on Khaleda’s condition. “We’ve received updates, and Alhamdulillah, she is now much better both mentally and physically,” he said.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to the London Clinic on January 8 for advanced treatment, under the care of liver specialist Professor John Patrick Kennedy. She was accompanied by a six-member medical team from Bangladesh, including BNP standing committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, who traveled with her via an air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar.
Dr. Zahid confirmed that Khaleda’s medical team is conducting routine tests and adjusting her treatment protocol based on the results. "She is doing better than before," he said, noting that the doctors have reviewed her medical history, including issues with her liver, kidneys, and heart.
Khaleda Zia is also receiving home-cooked meals prepared by BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife, Zubaida Rahman, who personally deliver the meals to the hospital four times a day. Additionally, Khaleda’s three granddaughters are spending time with her, which has lifted her spirits. "She is mentally very happy and cheerful to have her granddaughters by her side after such a long time," Dr. Zahid added.
The 79-year-old former prime minister has been battling multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis, kidney complications, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis. Her health worsened after her imprisonment in 2018 following a corruption conviction. However, the government temporarily released her in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and she has since received medical care both in Dhaka and abroad.
